Book Review: Extraordinary Means by Robyn Schneider

Goodreads Description:

From the author of The Beginning of Everything: two teens with a deadly disease fall in love on the brink of a cure.

At seventeen, overachieving Lane finds himself at Latham House, a sanatorium for teens suffering from an incurable strain of tuberculosis. Part hospital and part boarding school, Latham is a place of endless rules and confusing rituals, where it's easier to fail breakfast than it is to flunk French.

There, Lane encounters a girl he knew years ago. Instead of the shy loner he remembers, Sadie has transformed. At Latham, she is sarcastic, fearless, and utterly compelling. Her friends, a group of eccentric troublemakers, fascinate Lane, who has never stepped out of bounds his whole life. And as he gradually becomes one of them, Sadie shows him their secrets: how to steal internet, how to sneak into town, and how to disable the med sensors they must wear at all times.

But there are consequences to having secrets, particularly at Latham House. And as Lane and Sadie begin to fall in love and their group begins to fall sicker, their insular world threatens to come crashing down. Told in alternating points of view, Extraordinary Means is a darkly funny story about doomed friendships, first love, and the rare miracle of second chances.

In a nutshell, if John Green's The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska had a kid, and the kid is a huge Harry Potter, anime and Doctor Who fangirl who loves spontaneous adventure and Butter Beer Latte from Starbucks, Extraordinary Means is the beautiful offspring!

Robyn Schneider's previous book The Beginning of Everything (Review Here) is one of my all time favourite and most influential book, not to mention a book that 'Saved my life' so when I heard that she was coming out with Extraordinary Means I knew I have to have it in my life!

Extraordinary Means is a coming of age story told in alternate POV, follows Lane and Sadie who used to go to the same summer camp when they were younger, reunites years later at Latham House, a boarding school specialized in treating teens with tuberculosis (which both of our MCs have been diagnosed with).

First off I enjoyed the woodsy setting of the school and how its pictured to be like summer camp or a sky lodge. Obviously the students are there to take it easy like they are on a vacation in order to recover.

I love with Robyn Schneider's writing style on how one moment its intelligently written with its the medical talk and the metaphors the next its light hearted, sweet & touching and laugh out loud funny followed by emotions and feels.

From the synopsis and the theme of the book it sounds like a book full of feels and though it was a rollercoaster ride emotions, I laugh and awe with the book more than sit in a corner and let the feels flow as the author is good at balancing the seriousness of the situation with quirky and random events and dialogs.

The plot was fun and well paced out. There was never a dull moment and I devoured the story within a day! I love reading their adventures and shenanigans as it was trilling watching them break the rules around the school. One of my favorites involves Sadie and her friends causing mischievous in their French class which I laugh so hard for a good 10 minutes that I had tears in my eyes!

Though I had fun reading most of the book the 'final act' was where emotions started following. The ending was a well rounded conclusion though it RUIEND ME!!! Bittersweet and heart-breaking that I did cry buckets and was not pretty. Also the last few pages was beautiful, provoking and poetically written that reminded me of the last pages of Robyn Schneider's previous book The Beginning of Everything and any the ending of most of John Green books. Its that kind of ending where I want to read it over and over cause its stuck in my head days after I am done with the story and really makes me think.

I love reading the main characters! They were realistic and relatable characters that I definitely see myself friends with. I found myself attached and cared for them especially Sadie.

Lane, an overachiever and straight A's student with a perfectly mapped out future of going to Stanford University takes a detour in life when he gets diagnosed with tuberculosis and is sent to Latham House, putting high school, AP classes and SAT prep on hold. At the start, Lane was very uptight, play by the rules and ambitious, always working instead of resting and ignoring Doctor's orders which at one point made his condition worse. While I like reading about his optimistic and ambitious character at the start, once he go on overload, I wanted him to slow down and smell the roses as he's the kind of person who is rushing to get to the future instead of living and enjoying the present.

That is what eventually once befriend with Sadie and her friends. His character arc was my favourite. He developed, changing himself for the better. He eventually loosen up, got out of his comfort zone and experience what life have in store!

Lane took a couple of chapter for me to warm up to though then again he kind of reminded me of my high school self. Even so I enjoyed his character nerdy yet witty narration.

Sadie's personality is opposite of Lane. Having a terrible past of fitting in at both school and the summer camp, she fits in well at Latham House, transforming from being a shy outcast to a free spirit trouble maker. I adored Sadie from the start! She's sarcastic, sassy, fearless and spontaneous. She also have been at Latham House for the longest of all the characters, neither getting better nor worse. I love reading her crazy ideals and adventures even if it means sneaking around and breaking the rules. The only time I was not a fan of her character was that one time when she did something stupid (not gonna say too much as its a spoiler!) that annoyed me but eventually made up for it.

Their relationship was what made the book for me! I love their bantering and connection which made me smile and giggle with awe at their adorableness but also pulled my heart, making it fall into a million peace's. Lane was freaking sweet and a gentlemen with Sadie which made me swoon even more reading them together

The story is heavy on the romance and is well paced out! The romance started as a love hate relationship which is my favorite kind of romance. It was not one of those that took FOREVER for the ship to sail, so we got a good amount of romantic fluff between them. However when the ship hit a rock... *cries*.

It was also heavy on friendship and I love the diverse cast of side characters. Nick, Charlie and Marina were awesome friends to read about! They are the kind of 'cool nerds', with a lot in common but also have their own distinctive personality and interest. My favorite of the bunch is Nick who have some of the best and laugh out loud hilarious moments in the book.

I freaking love this book and though it does sounds like a TFIOS/LFA mash up (FYI I've read both book and love them and know enough about them for this compare), this is not a rip-off! Robyn Schneider has a distinctive style and narration that when I read her books I instantly know its her writing. From the geeky yet well planned Harry Potter and Doctor Who references to the easy to read and well written and researched medical narrations, the author has a unique and refreshing way of telling a story and I enjoy it!

Both of the author's books are 'medical narration' which is something slowly growing in the YA genre.

Like the The Beginning of Everything, Extraordinary Means is a sweet and touching yet a tragic love story. Its a book about finding hope and strength, second chances even if its a miracle, friendship and first love even when death is around the corner.

Its also a coming of age story about enjoying life to the fullest, taking spontaneous risks and taking things slower as we might missed what that road not taken have in store for us.

I think, laugh and cried with this book, wanting more of this author's awesome stories!

When this post goes up I'll have already gotten my lovely hard back of the book in the mail and am gonna re read it and devoured it into pieces... okay I'll keep it in one piece :P !

Highly recommend this book especially to the John Green fans patiently waiting for his next book and needs something fill that void along with Rainbow Rowell fans, PotterHeads, Whovians and secret menu Starbucks lovers.

Book Review: Model Misfit (Geek Girl #2) by Holly Smale

Goodreads Description:

“My name is Harriet Manners, and I am still a geek.”

Harriet knows that modelling won’t transform you. She knows that being as uniquely odd as a polar bear isn’t necessarily a bad thing (even in a rainforest). And that the average person eats a ton of food a year, though her pregnant stepmother is doing her best to beat this.

What Harriet doesn’t know is where she’s going to fit in once the new baby arrives.

With summer plans ruined, modelling in Japan seems the perfect chance to get as far away from home as possible. But nothing can prepare Harriet for the craziness of Tokyo, her competitive model flatmates and her errant grandmother’s ‘chaperoning’. Or seeing gorgeous Nick everywhere she goes.

Because, this time, Harriet knows what a broken heart feels like.

Can geek girl find her place on the other side of the world or is Harriet lost for good?

SUGAR COOKIES!!!

Harriet and her random facts are back and she is more of a geek than before!

This time she's off to Tokyo, Japan for her modelling job and as always not a bed of roses and Unicorns as someone is trying to sabotage the photo shoot and her career.

To top that Lion Boy dumped her.

It was fun following Harriet around Japan in her usual clumsy geeky ways as she model with an octopus, deals with her roommates and being away from home along with. She shows us that even though she has everything a girl can ask for life is still not perfect.

We see the return of our favourite characters from Geek Girl like her parents, Wilber, Yoka Ito along with Nat and Toby. I love how we get to more character development in this book as that was something that Geek Girl was lacking of.

We don't get to see alot of Harriet's parents Richard and Annabel as Annabel is heavily pregnant and Richard can't take Harriet to Tokyo as he is looking for a job and needs to be with Annabel for when the baby arrives but we do see them pop up trough out the book at the randomness times and it was some of the most entertaining parts of the book.

While we got to see Nat and Toby for a short amount of time i actually like them more in this book (yes even Toby the creepy stalker).

Nick aka Lion Boy I had such mix feeling bout him trough the book and was probably feeling what Harriet was feeling. In the end Lion Boy charmingness won me (and Harriet) over. Also its great to finally know more bout him as i felt like he was a 'prop' in Geek Girl (along with Nat).

Also in case you guys don't know he is Yoka Ito's nephew and I don't know why it never crossed my mind that he is half Japanese and its mentioned he's Australian so I had a hard time picturing Lion boy in Geek Girl. Jordan Rodrigues aka Christian Reed from Dance Academy as Nick anyone?!?!

I also love the detail and development on his relationship with Harriet!

Also Wilbur the 'Fairy godmother' was freaking awesome! Always there to save the day and get Harriet out of trouble! Seriously one of my favorite characters and his random sugar coated unicorn words makes me smile!

Some new characters introduced includes Harriet roommate Poppy and Riu. Poppy i had some doubts from the start but Rui I adore her! Rui, a Japanese model who is practicing her English in hoping to move to Australia. Its super fun, cute and a bit crazy watching her speaking English in the process mixing up her words and pronunciation.

Then there's Bounty, Harriet's step-grandmother who takes her to Japan and looks out for her. Bounty is like a grandma version of Wilbur minus the random sugar coated unicorn words.

Overall i love this book so freaking much! Especially the ending it really warms my heart and thank goodness I was home when reading that last page or else I'll probably burst into tears and get a bad case of home sickness. Also the romance makes me melt! The plot twist caught me off guard! I breezed trough this in a day literally hugged this book and squeal at the end of the heartwarming cuteness.

If you like Geek Girl you need to check out Modal Misfit as its so much better than the first book!

Trust me you'll laugh with the book and naw with the cuteness!

Also if you like Sheldon from Big Bang Theory, Harriet is basically a teenage model version of him!

Book Review : Geek Girl (Geek Girl #1) by Holly Smale

Goodreads Description:

Harriet Manners knows a lot of things.

She knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a "jiffy" lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. What she isn't quite so sure about is why nobody at school seems to like her very much. So when she's spotted by a top model agent, Harriet grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her Best Friend's dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of the impossibly handsome supermodel Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.

As Harriet veers from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her uber-geeky stalker, Toby, she begins to realise that the world of fashion doesn't seem to like her any more than the real world did.

And as her old life starts to fall apart, the question is: will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?

I was smiling like an Idiot when I was done with this book... like literally have a big smile xD

Okay so I picked this book up cause of the title and the nerdy glasses on the cover.

Set in the UK, 'Geek Girl' follows Harriet who is a geek and is well aware of it. Tired of being bullied by mean girl Alexis and her classmates for being a geek, when discovered by Wilbur, a talent scout for a modeling agency during a catastrophic school trip, Harriet takes the opportunity in hopes of changing her life.
Though it sounds like the typical 'Geek turn Chic' story this one is anything but typical! The book has a lot of depth and has a unique way of dealing with being yourself, don't care of what others think, consequences of lying, friendship and family.

I love reading Harriet's narration! Its very sarcastic, quirky and brainy and if you are one of those who like trivia or live with an OED you'll enjoy all the random facts Harriet throws at you.

Also I immediately clicked with Harriet's character as I could relate to her (yes I am a geek girl!). Cute, geeky know-it-all yet naive and socially awkward, trough the book we watch her grow in confidence and be comfortable with herself. Also I love how even though she's a model she is still down to earth.

Harriet's parents are some of the bookish parents I've read! In fact they are exactly like my parents!

At first I was not a fan of her her super strict and overbearing lawyer step-mother but when the book hits a certain point I immediately love the mum. As for her dad, he is the 'fun parent'. Laugh out loud and childish yet super supportive and caring for his daughter I love the moments where we read about her dad and he even have some of the best lines in the book!
In fact when reading the book I was picturing David Tennent aka Tenth doctor (aka my doctor :P) as Harriet dad!

Harriet's best friend Nat was both a hit and a miss character for me. We didn't get to know much about her character other than that she's loyal and is always standing up for Harriet when she's being bullied as well as she's an aspiring model so think how awkward it must have been when her best friend go offered a modeling contract and not her.
Same goes for Nick aka Lion Boy. His character was kinda vague and I found him popping in and out of the story at random. Even so every time we see him we learn more about him and some parts got me by surprise. Also did I mention that he's a top model and Harriot's love Interest? Though I found this book not romance heavy, there is some sweet yet awkward romance going on but I felt like THAT bit at the end is just too forced.

Alexis aka the Queen Bee and the Bully who is always tormenting Harriet cause she is smart and a Geek... I hated here with a pure passion. What's interesting is that Alexis is based on the author's experience in real life. While I admit some bullies are awful, Alexis was just down right Cruel! Think tyrant cruel. Some of the things that she does to Harriet were freaking terrible and its sad to read about it. (random fact: both me and my brother were bullied trough out primary and secondary school so I feel freaking sad whenever I read about a character being badly bullied.)  Long story short, she makes Harriet's life a living hell.

Toby who's Harriet fellow geek, classmate and stalker... okay thought I admit he does have some really funny moments but to know that he is her stalker... a part of me want's to shout 'GET A RESTRAINING ORDER' at Harriet or something as stalkers creep the heck out of me!
 ITS.JUST.WRONG!!!

Wilbur was a very random character that I always look forward to reading him as he is freaking hilarious! Think Marc St. James from Ugly Betty but with the charismatic and hilarious lines like "my little pot of bean paste"! Yup I freaking love Wilbur!!

Yuka Ito... okay at first I misread it as Yoko Ono so I was picturing her trough out the book.
Anyways I love reading about her as she was really mysterious!

This book is fun, smart and shows the behind the scenes of fashion and modeling (and that it can be kinda dangerous). I also love all the twist and turn of the plot which makes it a page turner as well as turns Harriet's world upside down.

Overall definitely check out this book if you're in for a 'geek chick' read!

I really enjoy this book cause not only does it put me in fits of giggle and smile like there is no tomorrow but this book feels real!

Fast pace, lighthearted, fluffy and smart this is a book you will want to read if you want to cheer yourself up when you're having a bad day.
Read this if you like The Princess Diaries series meets Ugly Betty meets Cinderella.

Though this book works well as a stand along, its actually part of a series. I'm definitely picking up the sequel the next time i see it in the bookshop!

Lately I've been in a 'nerdy' contemporary kick so what was the last 'nerdy' book you've read?

Apart from Geek Girl I just completed The Boyfriend App and The Summer I Become a nerd (expect reviews on those soon) and I am currently reading An Anatomy of a Misfit.

DFTBA guys :P
